Sania Mirza (born 15 November 1986, in Mumbai) is a professional Indian tennis player. From 2003 until her retirement from singles in 2013, she was ranked by the Women's Tennis Association as India's No.1 player, both in singles and doubles. Throughout her career, she has established herself as one of the highest-paid and high-profile athletes in India. Sania is the the most successful female Indian tennis player in history and one of the most popular female athletes in the world. More than a decade after her debut on the tennis-court, she still carries the torch for women's tennis in the country. From quiet the beginning to making history for India and now winning some of the biggest doubles titles on the planet, Mirza has been a trailblazer through and through.
In her career, Mirza has notable wins over Svetlana Kuznetsova, Vera Zvonareva and Marion Bartoli; as well as former World No. 1s Martina Hingis, Dinara Safina, and Victoria Azarenka. She is the highest ranked female player ever from India, with a career high ranking of 27 in singles but a wrist injury forced her to give up her singles career and focus on doublesr reaching as high as 5 in doubles rankings. She has achieved a number of firsts for her native country, including surpassing US$1 million in career earnings (now over 4 million), winning a Pro-level title, and winning three major mixed doubles titles at the 2009 Australian Open, the 2012 French Open and the 2014 US Open; as well as qualifying for (and eventually winning) the WTA Finals in 2014. Mirza is also the third Indian woman in the Open Era to feature and win a round at a Grand Slam tournament. On top of that, she has won a total of 14 medals including 6 Gold at three major multi-sport events, namely the Asian Games, the Commonwealth Games and the Afro-Asian Games.
Mirza was named one of the 50 heroes of Asia by Time in October 2005. In March 2010, The Economic Times named Mirza in the list of the "33 women who made India proud". In a country where female athletes are few and far between, and where cricket and Bollywood loom large on the cultural horizon, she has become an icon in her own right. Sania Mirza has been appointed as the UN Women's Goodwill Ambassador for South Asia during the event held to mark the International Day To End Violence Against Women on 25 th November 2014.
Sania was born in Mumbai (then Bombay) to a builder Imran Mirza and his wife Naseema, who worked in a printing business on 15 November 1986. Shortly after her birth, her family moved to Hyderabad where she and younger sister Anam were raised in a Shi'a Muslim family. She took up tennis at the age of six. She has been coached by her father and also Roger Anderson.
Mirza began playing tennis at the age of six, turning professional in 2003. She was trained by her father. Mirza won 10 singles and 13 doubles titles as a junior player. She won the 2003 Wimbledon Championships Girls' Doubles title, partnering Alisa Kleybanova. She also reached the semifinals of the 2003 French Open Girls' Doubles, with Sanaa Bhambri, and the quarterfinals of the 2002 US Open Girls' Doubles.
n 2009, Sania Mirza became engaged to childhood friend Sohrab Mirza, millionaire businessman. However the wedding was called off shortly after. She started seeing Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik. On 12 April 2010, she married Shoaib Malik in a traditional Muslim Islamic Wedding ceremony at the Taj Krishna Hotel in Hyderabad, India followed by Pakistani wedding customs for a mahr of 6.1 million (US$137,500). Their Walima ceremony was held in Lahore, Pakistan. The online attention the wedding received made Mirza the most searched woman tennis player and Indian sportsperson in 2010, according to Google Trends. The wedding was even more controversial because Malik was accused by another girl of already being married to her and hence he could not marry Mirza without first divorcing her. Initially for many days, Malik refused to grant the divorce claiming he was never married. As this resulted in media attention; he finally divorced the girl paving the way for his marriage to Mirza.
She attended NASR school in Hyderabad and later graduated from St. Mary's College.[original research? She is related to former cricket captains Ghulam Ahmed of India, and Asif Iqbal of Pakistan.
Currently, Mirza is the brand ambassador for the Indian state of Telangana. Mirza has been coached by her father Imran and later Roger Anderson. She names Steffi Grafand Roger Federer as her tennis idols, and admires Mahatma Gandhi. Mahesh Bhupathi, Bethanie Mattek-Sands, Vania King, Cara Black, Rushmi Chakravarthi and Caroline Wozniacki are some of Mirza's best friends on tour, all of which who have played doubles alongside her.

Tennis star Sania Mirza, who turned showstopper for designer Ritu Pande at the ongoing Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2015, says she does not follow fashion trends but loves to dress-up on special occasions.
The 27-year-old tennis ace, who was known for her sporty chic look, sashayed down the ramp in a white maxi dress embroidered from the bottom. She kept her look minimal in just earings with her hair falling on one shoulder.
"It's fun to walk the ramp. Ritu is a dear friend and brilliant designer. I am walking the ramp after a year and it's something which I don't do often. Like any other girl, I love fashion a lot. I love to dress-up for occasions. I don't follow trends and love comfortable clothes," Sania said after the show.
Apart from her tennis commitments, Sania is seen these days in Bollywood parties with her Pakistani cricketer husband Shoaib Mailk. Asked if she is looking at a career in films too, Sania said, "You never know... But I must tell you that I am too shy to face a camera. I don't think Bollywood is my cup of tea. I love to watch Bollywood films."
The state ambassador of Telangana recently won the tennis mixed doubles gold in the Incheon Asian Games. The tennis player said she loves to wear long outfits when not at the field.
"My profession demands me to wear short clothes but I am not comfortable with short dresses when I am off the field. I like longer stuffs and gowns," she added.
Bangalore based designer Ritu's collection titled 'Lady in Lace' had lace as one of the main components. She chose the colour palette as white with minimal accessories. The outfits ranged from long dresses to kaftans and Kurtas.
Tennis sensation, Sania Mirza was also present at the event wearing a Neeta Lulla white & black churidar-kurta with violet floral embroidery and lace sleeves. She paired her ensemble with a pair of black pumps and gold earrings.
This event brought together a lot of celebs to commemorate the Global peace initiative on the 26th of November. Other Bolly celebrities like Viveik and Suresh Oberoi were also present for the cause. The stars participated whole-heartedly to prolifer love and peace on that day.

Recently beautiful and gorgeous tennis star Sania Mirza was spotted during the Welingkar Institute of Management Research and Development ‘Global Peace Initiative’ and ‘Walk of Peace’ campaign in Mumbai. Sania Mirza was wearing a ethnic white and black shalwar kameez designed by Neeta Lulla. There is a embroidery work on the dress. She later expressed her feelings to twitter: “Had so much fun walking the ramp for Neeta Lulla for the ‘WE’ school Walk for peace campaign. Love and peace to all,” She tweeted.
